Abstract

Perimenopausal alterations constitute nowadays an important public health issue. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has allowed treating perimenopausal symptoms and preventing long-term outcome due to hormonal deficiency.
Objective: to optimize HRT in Public Health users (Ministerio de Salud Pública, MSP) through the analysis of its characteristics and results.
Methods: we undertook a longitudinal, observational and prospective study. Two-side analysis and a level of 5% by means of t-test for independent samples and paired t-test for matched data according to the variable in question were used.
Results: characteristics of Uruguayan population did not differ from those described by international studies. A statistical significant change of clinical symptoms occurred, lipid profile improved and body weight lightly was increased with HRT. Only 5% of the studied women were excluded because of side effects. One third of the population stopped treatment without medical indication.
Conclusions: public Health users presented adequate tolerance, clinical and paraclinical responses to HRT. Accurate information and continue drug availability is needed in order to improve accessibility and completion of a therapy mainly based on prevention.
