Abstract

The Editorial Committee of the Uruguayan Medical Journal has resolved that the 2020 edition of the award for the Best original article published in that year be named after Dr. Enrique Soto Durán. The award consists of recognition of the best original qualitative or quantitative research work Enrique was a Professional with a capital letter. He fully cultivated the most precious values of the medical profession: patient welfare, social justice and autonomy. He practiced the profession committed to professional updating, of which he was an example among his peers, as well as an enthusiastic promoter. But not only that, he did it with the utmost honesty with patients and colleagues, respecting the confidentiality of the medical act and the human relationship, cautious and prudent with patients. He tirelessly promoted these values, but far from doing it with his speech, he accompanied it with his daily actions. But to this commendable professional dimension a singular human dimension is added. Enrique was a Knight, also with a capital letter, but not precisely because of his noble origin, but because of his dimension as a good person, kind, respectful to unequaled extremes, even with someone who could have the most diverse view or opinion of a particular subject . A serious person, admirable for his kindness and considerate disposition, even in the deepest dissent. To these professional and human dimensions, the dimension of him as a social activist is added. Enrique promoted with dedication and effort all that he professed. It was thus that he occupied places of relevance in the Senate of the Republic, defending social justice, culture and human rights. He was president of the Uruguayan Society of Cardiology and secretary of the Medical College of Uruguay, from where he worked for the updating of professional skills and for medical recertification. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Uruguayan Medical Union, from where he defended the worthy exercise of our profession, always safeguarding his most precious values.
