A very recent ruling by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) of November 28, 2012, Case of Artavia Murillo et al. Versus Costa Rica (the Judgment) (1), has shed new light on such controversial issues as the beginning of the life and legal status of the embryo, with definitions that will surely have a wide impact on practices such as assisted fertilization, the debate on abortion and the treatment of embryos.
