Safe hospitals: an attainable goal

Abstract

The earthquake produced in the Ica region in Peru, in October 2007, allowed us to verify again how fragile the health sector is in the face of events such as the earthquakes: all available hospital infrastructure was lost. The following years have also allowed us to see health facilities out of service due to floods, hurricanes and, finally, the earthquakes at the beginning of this year in Haiti and Chile put the issue back on the table in many of our countries in the region.
