Abstract

The Psychiatric Unit of the Faculty of Medicine attends emergency, in-patients and out-patients at the Hospital de Clínicas. Considering the record system slowdown and the lack of processed and standarized data on characteristics and pathologies affecting that population, epidemiological research could not have been done yet. As a first step to modify that trend a research able to characterized this population has been conducted, whose aimes were to standarize an open up database and complete its further statistical analysis. Data were collected according to international criteria. The population was 864. Primary psychiatric pathologies were severe depressive disorders in 26,3% of the patients, anxiety and adjustment disorders in approximately 15% of the patients for each illness. Methodology was found to be adequate for this research whose results were proved invaluable to assistance and prevention planning, as well as setting teaching and training strategies.
