Abstract

The Geneva Declaration was approved at the second General Assembly of the World Medical Association (WMA), in September 1948.
With the excuse of creating a document that replaced the Hippocratic Oath, considering the scientific and social advances of modernity, the AMM proposed a document that sought to create a moral reserve for all doctors. While the need for an updated declaration of the Hippocratic Oath, known 2400 years earlier, was evident, the declaration arises as a reaction to the medical crimes of Nazi Germany.
It never reached the impact of the Helsinki Declaration for Human Research, but it is still recognized internationally as the "Modern Hippocratic Oath" and several medical schools quickly adopted the promise with the title approved by the WMA Assembly: Oath of Hippocrates - Geneva Formula.

At the moment of being admitted among the members of the medical profession, I solemnly commit myself to consecrate my life to the service of humanity. I will keep my teachers respect and recognition that they are creditors. I will perform my art with awareness and dignity. The health and life of my patient will be the first of my concerns. I will respect the secret of those who have trusted me. I will maintain to the fullest extent of my means, the honor and noble traditions of the medical profession. My colleagues will be my brothers. I will not allow that between my duty and my patient come considerations of religion, nationality, race, party or class. I will have absolute respect for human life, from its conception. Even under threats I will not admit to using my medical knowledge against the laws of humanity. I make these promises solemnly, freely, for my honor. ”
